Master's Degrees
Graduate degree programs are available to students who have obtained a bachelor's or master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
Most online programs are delivered asynchronously, which allows students to access course assignments anytime, anywhere. Some online programs, however, require occasional synchronous activities, such as on-campus labs or scheduled meetings via web-conferencing. Review program requirements carefully.
Business Administration
The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is designed for persons intending to pursue careers as management generalists in business, non-profit organizations, the private sector, or in governmental organizations. The graduate courses in Business Administration are designed to develop analytical skills and provide in-depth knowledge of modern business management practices. The case method is emphasized to better prepare students for responsible positions in the business environment. Courses are delivered asynchronously online.
Counseling
The Master of Arts in Counseling is designed to prepare students for a variety of careers. Training is provided by skilled professors and courses in a wide spectrum of subjects. There are four clinical strands embedded into the Counseling Program: 1) Mental Health Counseling, 2) School Counseling, 3) Substance Abuse Counseling, and 4) Rehabilitation Counseling. The final two of these strands must be completed along with the Clinical Mental Health Master’s degree, this allows students in the 3rd and 4th strands to qualify for two licenses.
Education
There are two Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) programs to choose from. The first is designed for students with no academic preparation in the field of education. It prepares these students, who have often been involved in other careers, to obtain a teaching license and enter the classroom. The second program provides professional development for teachers already in the classroom. These master’s candidates already hold a bachelor’s degree in Education and generally have taught in the public schools. Obtain an MAT with an emphasis in elementary education, secondary education, reading education or special education. Courses are delivered asynchronously online.
Educational Leadership
The Master of Arts in Educational Leadership prepares teachers and other education professionals for New Mexico state licensure as school administrators. Leadership, communication, curriculum, assessment, teacher evaluation, and the use of technology are taught by way of active student participation. The program includes 36 credit hours and is delivered asynchronously online.
History
The Master of Arts in History serves multiple purposes, as it will 1) provide much needed depth of training for educators who are certified to teach Social Studies; 2) enhance the expertise of students who enroll at WNMU in order to become part-time instructors at community colleges and/or 3) as a program that will be offered online, offer enhanced access to graduate work in History for students who currently live in rural areas or otherwise have limited access to such opportunities in higher education.
Interdisciplinary Studies
The Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies is a unique degree program that allows students to study in multiple disciplines and see the interconnectedness of those disciplines. Students are required to complete a minimum of 36 credit hours in either two or three fields of study. Students work closely with a faculty advisor in each field of study. Courses are delivered asynchronously online.
Nursing
The 33-credit hour Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) is offered entirely online. The primary purpose of the program is to improve health care delivery in southwestern New Mexico through the preparation of master’s level nurses with special training in community and rural/frontier health. Students will be admitted to begin classes in the fall semester of 2019.
Social Work
The program leading to a Master of Social Work (MSW) builds on a liberal arts foundation and is designed to prepare social workers for leadership roles in developing and providing services to individuals, families, groups, communities and organizations. The program provides a generalist Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) with an opportunity to specialize as a rural practitioner or concentrate on additional coursework in areas such as school social work or working with military families. Most courses are delivered asynchronously online, but some require synchronous web-conferencing.
Bachelor's Degrees
Undergraduate degree programs are available to students who have earned a high school diploma, GED, or are transferring from another college or university.

Business Administration - Marketing
A bachelor’s degree in Business Administration – Marketing is an exciting, dynamic business discipline that has applications in any industry. A marketing major will study consumer behavior, product development, promotional strategies, pricing concepts and distribution opportunities. Examples of possible career paths include: import/export business, product development, advertising, global logistics and sale/brand management.
Chemical Dependency
Students can obtain a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in Chemical Dependency Counseling. The degree program prepares students for careers in fields related to chemical dependency, counseling, prevention, administration and research. Students may seek employment in public and private institutions as counselors, clinical directors, program directors, prevention clinicians, researchers, case managers, and managers in adolescent and adult treatment programs.
Criminal Justice
The Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice prepares students for careers in law enforcement, corrections, courts, the military, and with civilian security contractors. Courses are provided in a sequence that enables the student to graduate in four years of full-time study. The program provides the multi-disciplinary education necessary for success in today’s diverse environment where law enforcement professionals are expected to deal with crime and disorder in sophisticated ways. Courses are delivered asynchronously online.
Early Childhood Education
WNMU’s Early Childhood Programs offer two bachelor’s degree professional pathways leading to either a New Mexico Early Childhood Teacher License or a bachelor’s degree without licensure.
Elementary Education
The Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education is a performance-based program that provides extensive field experience to enhance classroom learning. Students who complete the program successfully are qualified for a K-8 elementary education license in the State of New Mexico.
English
The Bachelor of Arts in English prepares students for careers in a variety of fields by helping them develop critical thinking skills and exploring what it means to be a thoughtful citizen in the 21st century. This program of study fosters a keen appreciation of great literature. Not only will students be inspired to read, critically analyze and create written works of art, but they will also be inspired to search for ways to positively change the world.
General Business
A Bachelor of Applied Science in General Business prepares students for a career in a supervisory position in the area of their associate or technical degree. The associate’s degree, or other coursework, is combined with a specialization in management to produce uniquely qualified managerial personnel. The degree is perfect to cover a broad range of basics or for students with interdisciplinary interests.
History
The discipline of History is a systematic study of the past, accompanied by an attempt to use the knowledge to help explain human nature and contemporary affairs. Courses within the discipline strive to provide the student with the foundation of a liberal arts education. History contributes significantly to requirements for the Pre-Law minor, Latin American Studies minor, and provides elective courses in other major and minor degree programs. Students may choose either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science in History.
Instructional Technology & Design
The Instructional Design and Technology (ITD) program at Western New Mexico University (WNMU) offers programs at the undergraduate and master’s level, which prepares ITD professionals to meet the needs of learners of all ages, young and old, in a digital world. ITD programs develop skills in planning, designing, implementing and assessing instruction, and program management. With a focus on digital learning, skills are developed which enhance instructional material design and course design and delivery, strengthening skills which can be employed in face to face, online, or video conference settings for professional development, classroom instruction, and distance education at all levels and in various contexts. Instructional design is an emerging field expected to grow rapidly in coming years and create large numbers of jobs
Interdisciplinary Studies
The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) degree allows students the flexibility and opportunity to design their own course of study to accomplish their personal educational goals. In addition to lower division general education requirements, students can study a wide range of subjects at the upper division level, or explore special interests by limiting their coursework to specific topics. No minor is required. Depending on the courses a student chooses to take, the degree can be obtained fully online and asynchronously.
Mathematics
Mathematicians in industry today rely heavily on computational tools, such as the MATLAB programming environment. In our Math and Computer Science program we are encouraging an emphasis on interactive learning, which includes a technology and an experimentation component, to allow students to more easily grasp concepts while becoming experienced in a wide variety of technical tools.

Mathematics Education
Students studying at WNMU to become math teachers are in the unique position to earn a double major: in education and in mathematics. Working closely with faculty in the School of Education, students fulfill the requirement for New Mexico state licensure with competency in mathematics and at the same time fulfill the requirements for the math major. Math education majors gain experience with the New Mexico Common Core State Standards in Mathematics and with the NCTM Standards and Benchmarks.
Nursing
Applicants to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program must have a current Registered Nurse license. The program is designed for the working nurse and is fully accredited by CCNE. The curriculum addresses contemporary issues in nursing and encourages students to explore increasingly complex roles in nursing both in and out of the hospital in order to enhance critical thinking skills. Courses are delivered asynchronously online. A practicum component is required.
Political Science
You can pursue either the Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, or the Bachelor of Science in Political Science. Regardless of your choice, you will get a broad education in politics and government institutions through courses that sharpen analytical thinking skills, expose you to animated debates about theory and methodology, which have been an integral part of the discipline over the past half century; and challenge you to critically evaluate the rights and responsibilities of citizens living in political societies.
Psychology
The baccalaureate degree in Psychology provides students with a solid foundation in a liberal arts education, as well as breadth and depth within the field of Psychology. A minor, such as criminal justice, computer science or political science, is required. Courses are delivered asynchronously online.
Rehabilitation Services
The Bachelor of Applied Science in Rehabilitation Services degree prepares the student for a wide range of careers working with people who have disabilities. Students are prepared to work in case management, job development, community rehabilitation programs, drug and alcohol treatment program technician services, independent living centers and assistive technology. The program is delivered asynchronously online. Field experience is required.
Secondary Education
The baccalaureate degree in Secondary Education is a performance-based program that provides extensive field experience to enhance classroom learning. Students who successfully complete the program are qualified for a 7-12 secondary education license in the State of New Mexico.
Social Work
The Bachelor of Social Work prepares the student for employment opportunities in the fields of human services, health care, children’s protective services, therapy, hospice, agency administration, public schools and more. Most courses are delivered asynchronously online, but some require synchronous web-conferencing.
Sociology
Sociology as a discipline focuses on the study of group life. Sociologists theorize about, research and critically analyze social institutions such as family, religion, law, the economy, healthcare, and education. Sociologists pay particular attention to social inequalities that may be present in a society. Social characteristics of race, gender, social class, sexual orientation and age are often salient dimensions of inequality, and affect how social life is structured and experienced by people inhabiting different placement in a stratified social world. Faculty members in Sociology at WNMU emphasize the importance of our students’ development of a “sociological imagination,” a critical and creative way of approaching the study of social life. The completion of a Sociology degree will serve our graduates well in any field of employment they decide to pursue. The Sociology program offers courses in substantive areas that help students acquire sociological perspectives, develop their research skills and engage their sociological imaginations.
Students can pursue a Bachelors of Science or Bachelors of Arts degree in Sociology or a minor in the discipline. Currently, there are two full time sociologists that offer sixteen Sociology courses on an established rotational basis and also teach the Capstone Senior Seminar in the Social Sciences on a departmental rotational basis.
Special Education
The Bachelor of Science in Special Education is a performance-based program that provides extensive field experience to enhance classroom learning. The student who successfully completes this program will be qualified for a K-12 special education license in the State of New Mexico.

Early Childhood Education
The Associate of Arts in Early Childhood Education and Family Support prepares students for a range of careers that include teaching children ages birth-3rd grade, child care provider, home visitor, parent support specialist, early interventionist and program development specialist.
Human Services
The Associate of Arts in Human Services degree focuses on the prevention and remediation of problems to improve the quality of people’s lives. Graduates of this degree program hold professional and paraprofessional jobs in diverse settings such as group homes; halfway houses; correctional facilities; mental health centers; community health centers; family, child and youth agencies; substance abuse treatment centers; domestic violence shelters; government agencies and elder care facilities. Courses are delivered online and via web-conferencing.

Liberal Studies
The Associate of Arts in Liberal Studies degree is recommended for students whose educational goals require flexibility. The 2-year degree prepares students for transfer to a 4-year post-secondary institution and will also provide students with an opportunity to design a customized program to accomplish personal education goals. A minimum of 64 credit hours are required for the degree. Dependent on the courses a student chooses to take, the degree can be obtained fully online and asynchronously.
